In November 2015, Thornhill announced he would be running for president of the United States for the party's nomination in the 2016 presidential primaries. Thornhill's announcement garnered a large amount of publicity. He was able to hire famed campaign manager Bill Ericsson days after the campaign announcement.

At the party's first primary debate in December 2015, Thornhill was declared the victor. During the debate, he confessed to his affair, seconds before Vice President Selina Meyer was about to out it.

Thornhill won the Iowa caucus held in January 2016. He came in second in the New Hampshire primary. In between the two contests, Meyer ascended to the presidency and widened her support.

Ericsson left the Thornhill campaign in February 2016, declaring Thornhill to be incompetent. Thornhill suspended his campaign during the spring of 2016 and overall placed third. Meyer defeated Minnesota Governor Danny Chung for the nomination.

It is unknown whether or not Thornhill was present at the 2016 National Convention.
