Edna Lorraine Hughes (born 1953) served as the first lady of the United States from 2013 to 2016, being married to President Stuart Hughes. Hughes previously served as the first lady of Michigan from 2003 to 2011.
Background[]
Hughes has a history of mental instability and alcoholism. Whilst her husband was Governor of Michigan, she rarely made any appearances other than the annual Governor's Easter Egg hunt.[1] During her husband's 2012 presidential campaign, Edna Hughes' few campaign appearances allegedly ended with her being hustled off stage by her husband, leading to speculation that Hughes was a sexist.
First Lady of the United States (2013–2016)[]
Edna Hughes became first lady on January 20, 2013, following her husband's victory in the 2012 presidential election.
In September 2013, rumors speculated that Edna was feuding with Vice President Selina Meyer, including that Edna referred to Meyer as "creepy VP". That same month, the Hughes' adopted a dog named Kissy Biscuits, which conflicted with Meyer's plans to adopt a dog.
During Edna Hughes' tenure as first lady, Meyer claimed that Edna spent the majority of her days in the Executive Residence watching reruns of Law & Order.
Suicide attempt[]
In December 2015, Edna Hughes attempted to take her own life by overdosing on sleeping pills. After about a month of declining health, President Hughes decided to devote more time to care for her. On January 24, 2016, Hughes resigned as president of the United States, with the first lady being admitted to a hospital. Vice President Selina Meyer took the Oath of Office and assumed the position as president.
Subsequent activities[]
When Stuart Hughes resigned in January 2016, Edna was being admitted into the George Washington University Hospital.
Edna did not attend the opening of the Stuart Hughes Presidential Library and Museum in January 2018.
